It’s a great question, but Ivy seems to think she knows what I’m asking and she’s got that look. “I know it makes you uncomfortable and you’re afraid you’re going to get shot. But this is an honest question, not a political one. Do you believe he killed your wife, or did she kill you?” she asks.
I think about this a lot. For one of us it is one of the most important choices our lives are ever going to make and for the other of us it can be the single most important decision we make. I guess the truth is I don’t know. I hate getting trapped in a place and can’t decide whether or not I will be killed here or when. But there are times I would be so frightened of having to do it that it would be wrong for me to not take the chance now. I want to live. I have nothing to lose, nothing to fear. Maybe Ivy will give up her idea of how to solve all the social problems like the war and the pollution and the global warming and maybe she will just leave me alone, which would be a shame. She has a lot of ideas in mind anyway, but she can’t do much to get me to work together with her.
It would be foolish, not to say foolish, to let someone else take responsibility in my death, but there’s no one else I would rather see succeed now than myself. I don’t know what to do either.
I have two things to tell her.
I have to tell her that Ivy doesn’t remember me at all. That if I tried to tell her she’d tell me I was lying, a liar, or stupid. I can’t tell her that. It would feel like betraying her to try to save her. She is
