How can humans tell when a stone falls from a tree or a tree falls from a stone? Is it possible for humans to use their minds to move things? Is brain technology possible? Will it ever be possible to move a tree with one’s mind? And how many humans do we know who can move a tree with their minds?
The idea that you can talk to a tree and ask it to move seems completely bizarre, but it is not in the book. In some ways it’s even more bizarre than the idea that you can talk to a stone and ask it to drop, or even to make a ball of ice fall. In other ways, you can talk to stone and it will respond. You can talk to stone without having to ask it to fall because its physical limitations give it an ability to ignore you or move away. However, it is still necessary for you to make certain assumptions about it. Stone is hard and hard things will not move that far. Therefore, that is an even more difficult question to answer.
It is important to remember that we are talking about people who are at the limits of their technology. If they had a better way of moving objects, we might be able to ask them to make changes and even move rocks and trees. For example, imagine a world where you can make ice that is heavy enough for rocks to pick up. Such a thing might be possible. It might even be very, very easy to make and build things that have an ice-like substance that can float in the air. Imagine that we were able to build such things because we already understood how to do it. We had a lot of information on the nature of ice and the physics of the atmosphere that enabled us to determine how something can be made that way. Now, because these things are already part of the world, we can build them and use them. Maybe we are not quite there yet, but we are starting to move in the direction of science fiction.
In fact, such an idea is also presented in the book, but in a different way. Instead of talking to “plants” that have the ability to move, we talk to scientists who have an idea what such a device should be able to do to the environment.
