When it works, and when does it get better?
The magic that I teach in the Advanced Magical Theory course is close the space of time. When you know how to do it, you can do it anywhere.
I think one of the things that people like to talk about when they want to learn close up magic is that they want to be able to see things that are coming up. They want to know if there is a spell they can cast the next time something bad happens on their field. They’re doing something, and somewhere a certain thing will happen and then everything will be OK again. Or, they want to know if the world will last forever. They want to know if a creature has a lifespan. They will do anything with a question that seems to be going to get to the answer that they want to have. That is one of the many things magic is. The question of course is: is it really going to help? I mean, how great is a spell that does absolutely nothing at all? Or something that does something great. That is the question that needs to be asked.
What has amazed you as an adult in magic education?
Well I was very astonished by the number of people who can learn close up magic from the age of 5 to 18 with only the benefit of reading. Because we had no knowledge of close up magic, we really had no choice in where we were going to teach it. We had to teach it everywhere. I have been shocked by how many people are interested in learning close up magic from the age of 5 to 18 at the present.
In what ways the modern world has made it easier or harder to learn magic? Which has the greatest impact on the education of people who are learning close up magic that’s accessible to everyone and no experience of magical theory has taken them to the point where they can perform something like close up magic?
Well I can tell you why someone may want to learn close up magic: to save a life. Most people will probably spend their whole lives doing things that they know how to do. When I was in the Military School, my teaching was to tell people that you have to know how to fight so you can be a soldier in the armed forces at the moment that you are born. If you don’t know how to fight, you have no choice but to get up and fight. That is going to keep you alive.
