Most of levitation magic is not very well understood in terms of the process or its underlying mechanisms and principles. There is much debate over how and when levitation magic might occur and whether it even actually works, or how it might be made efficient. This article may be the first to explain how levitation magic works and how it works.
How does levitation magic operate?
The basic concept of a magic device is that it is a machine that can levitate something. A device can be either mechanical (like the one mentioned above) or electromagnetically powered (like Leviter). Magic devices are generally used to raise or lift something in the air or in the water. The basic purpose of a magic device is to be able to levitate something of a certain quality, and the mechanism that it uses to do this is the same. An air-powered (magnetically powered) levitation device such as the one illustrated in the image above, or a water-powered (magnetically powered) one such as the one shown in the image below, will not work when used to lift the substance, and the amount of air required to lift them may become significant.
What determines ‘quality’?
It is a common assumption that an air-powered magic device works well because of its low pressure (high velocity of movement), since this causes the air to work more violently. However, there are other factors that need to be considered. The lower the velocity, the greater the resistance to movement, and the more effort must be applied to lift a heavier mass. Therefore, the greater the resistance and the more energy (usually in the form of heat) is required in order for the magic device to operate in this manner.
Magnetic levitation
In the article The Art of Levitation written by Raph Beasley and illustrated in The Magician’s Apprentice, it is stated that “It must be emphasized that the levitation of air is no different from that for liquids”. While there are some differences in the mechanisms of the two levitators, both of them generate electromagnetic fields and are therefore able to ‘lift’ and ‘move’ objects or material which have magnetic attraction. The same technique is used in electromagnetism, where the magnetic field generated is enough to move the object or material, and the energy used to lift or move it is proportional to the energy in the object/material.
