I can’t think of a better way of answering this question than to give you a little background on MTG’s closing and opening methods – since you’ll have plenty of occasion to use them in this lesson.
First, the way MTG’s opening and closing loop works is this:
If the turn is a draw (or a mulligan) you can take a card from the top of your library and put it into your hand. If the turn is a discard (or a mulligan) you’ll discard a card from your hand. This is called taking a card out of the top of your deck, and this happens in almost every hand you play for most of the game. It’s a common play at the beginning of the game, and it’s not uncommon for the top card in your library to be this card.
If the turn is more like a mulligan (or you’re playing with 0 cards in hand) it might look something like this – and that’s the point at which the game will close. If you still have 0 cards in your library by the time this occurs, then the game ends. This is called taking a card out of the top of your deck, and it happens often enough that it becomes a well-known routine.
At the end of the turn when there isn’t any cards in your library to be taken out, you’ll take a card from your opponent’s graveyard. Sometimes these cards will be artifacts (for example, you just played Tarmogoyf and a fetch land for your opponent) or lands (for example, you draw a card during your opponent’s turn and your opponent takes something from your deck) and in other cases they will be cards from your opponents card selection. In any case that you take a card from someone else’s graveyard, you lose the game.
This cycle of cards works great for drawing you some cards, but we can use it for winning the game. This cycle of cards (with the exception of the Tarmogoyf cycle) can be cycled through as many times as you want to win the game. In the example of this course above, if we had 4 cards to take out of our opponent’s graveyard (which we did with no hand size restriction) we could have drawn four cards in a row and won the game. The cycle that stops cycling can also be cycled a second time. You can cycle all three cycles in one turn.
If you want to cycle the cycle
