The original Magic The Gathering, published by Urza Publishing Company and later expanded into Urza’s Destiny and Tempest, was released in January 1994.
As Magic grew in strength and popularity, a new expansion was published every so often, from the first Magic the Gathering to the current release of Magic 2014.
Magic 2015
In December 2005, Urza’s Destiny was rereleased in a new edition—in this case, called Magic 2015. Magic 2015 was a sequel to Magic 2006, which was also published by Urza. Magic 2015 was the first major expansion to be released for the Standard format. Magic 2015’s release was later followed by Magic 2016.
Magic 2008, Magic 2010, and Magic 2012
The first Magic card appeared in Magic 2008 (which is also the first released for the standard format of Standard), and Magic 2010, Magic 2012, and Magic 2015 (the current release) came out alongside it.
Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers
In January 2010, Wizards of the Coast released a new set of cards called Duels of the Planeswalkers. The set was an expansion of Magic 2008 which made use of a new card frame, and was set primarily as a promotional supplement to the events of Magic 2008.
All of the cards contained in the new Duels were not released by Wizards of the Coast for use outside of their own product. However, at the time of this writing, the cards have not yet been reprinted.
On August 20, 2011, Wizards and TCGplayer.com announced that Duels of the Planeswalkers would not be available in a Standard format until April 2012.
All cards of the Duels set, including the last ones, have been reprinted in Standard Format. They are included in some cards from the Standard format.
Legacy of the Wretched (1999)
The first Magic book to come out was the 2000 Legacy of the Wretched. Written by Dave Humpherys and David Humpherys. This set is set in the world of Kaladesh, and is a continuation of the adventures written in the previous instalment.
The set was released on October 7, 1999 and was then followed by the Magic 2010 Basic Set, and the Magic 2012 Core Set.
