“Is that…?” She nodded. The moon was far away; the sun had stopped shining behind the trees as a shadow lingered on the ground.
“Yes.”
In three months I would need to go back to see this again. If it was still alive the bird would need to be taken out again. The way the dead and the living had been, that didn’t seem to be a problem.
“It was all right,” she murmured. “I saw it die and there it was. Even still, even when I took away its arms and legs I don’t think it’d run away again. Not in such a case. I didn’t even want to look at it.”
I looked away, surprised. I was still trying to wrap my mind around what had happened. That thing…the thing that had made them run away from their homeland. What had they become? Was it something like what the legends said it was?
I’d grown up learning to read stories like that and it felt strange to me that people actually believed it to be true.
“I see,” I said. I had a strange sensation in my chest. “I’m glad I saw that.”
The feeling eased some, but not all. It made me wonder – the question in my head didn’t seem to be what was happening here, but what had happened before.
A lightness spread over my chest and in the air around me, like a weight having been released. It spread like water, filling up the room and washing over me. It came from the heart of all people.
