There is a lot that can go wrong but the overall average for horse races is about 90 minutes for the five laps. I know that some horses that are well known at the time don’t make the early-round. I’ve tried to work with those guys, give the horse good food and fluids and they have been in there for a while.
In your opinion, the fastest horse who came through this year in the short test format at St. Louis was the Irish warhorse Callum. How much time do you think was spent training him and how important was it in his success at the Kentucky Derby?
Not as much as I thought it would be, because Callum has an ability to work in both the 2-minutes-rule (about 2.5 laps) and the 6-minutes-rule (about five laps). This year, we have put Callum in all three rules, so we have been able to get the best outcome for him, with the exception of in the 7-minutes rule, which he has already got under control. There has been a good amount of training and there is a good ability to handle both rules.
What kind of an impact does a long start time (about 40 minutes before the end of the short test) had in the Kentucky Derby?
We believe it will have little impact on the race. But if you look at the horse race, it will make it tougher for horses to go through the race than in the short run. It is hard to predict the result after one hour, but the race can only run for so long and the last lap is the most important one. It is hard to predict but it will be harder to take a risk if the horse is a fast horse.
What role does the media or the media’s coverage have on a horse’s performance in the final race?
When you are running the short test race, with the media in the starting room and on the track, there is a lot that can happen. The media has the highest influence on the horse and can make or break an event. The media can make the horse look good, it can make the horse look bad and sometimes it comes down to the race announcer — the ones who actually do the judging. The announcer has the biggest influence there. When you race the race, you go about the race, you don’t think about the media.
