If we divide the total U.S. population by the size of its metropolitan area (i.e. the population of the biggest city within the metropolitan area) we get a “race-wise” distribution of the population:

So, the fastest-growing white city in the country is Columbus, OH, at 3.7% (2.9 million people). It’s followed by a little less than 1% (1.0 million) in Indianapolis, IN and less than 0.8% in Chicago, IL. If you look at the list of fastest-growing large metros (and, yes, there are a lot, including, interestingly, Phoenix, AZ), the white population increases substantially:
White: 6.4%
Black: 3.9%
Asian: 5.7%
Latino: 5.8%
Native American: 8.3%
Other: 2.8%
That means that the population growth rates of whites in the fastest-growing cities are significantly higher than those seen in white cities in the bottom ten:
White: 0.8%
Black: 0.4%
Asian: 0.4%
Latino: 0.2%
Native American: 0.2%
Other: 0.2%
So, despite the fact that Columbus, OH, is the second most populous city in the country, the fastest way for whites to get to Columbus is by having a higher proportion of white people living there than in the previous city. A little more than one in seven whites in the top ten cities has a black or American Indian ancestor.
