To answer that question I looked back at how a few other teams that were eliminated from playoff contention also played in the regular season. To my surprise, the way-betters were much more balanced – they didn’t only play two teams, and their games often involved more than one opponent.
We can see this again on a map of the regular season. The green dots represent the first place teams in the standings that are still in the NFL, and the blue dots represent those teams that went on to win the Super Bowl. We can see that the way-betting is much more evenly matched between the first and second place teams in each division – as in the second and third place teams from the Northeast and Midwest had to play the second and third place teams from the West, and vice versa.
The way-betting also makes for a much more even spread of teams playing each other in the regular season than in the way-bets.
That explains the strong regular season spread of the AFC, NFC, and NFL in the way-bets, as the way-betters gave away the most points in the NFL with their way-bets. In fact, even teams that didn’t win a Super Bowl are likely to get more money by way-boating, as well – even though, by league rule, even teams that didn’t win a Super Bowl are not eligible for the way-betting option, we can see that way-betting teams in the AFC – even though they didn’t take home a championship, did well enough to be worth more money in the way-betting.
The more balanced way-betting results in a lot more money being drawn from the NFL’s regular season. The NFL playoffs are a much different beast in the way-betting.
While the NFC and AFC regular season games had plenty of action, there was still far fewer teams playing each other in the NFL playoffs, because the NFL playoffs have fewer conference championship games. On average, the NFC and AFC playoff games have far fewer teams playing each other, and this is because the conference championship games are played more often than the Super Bowl.
For example, since 1999, the NFL postseason has had 32 conference championships and 15 Super Bowl teams. We’ll look at how these numbers will shake out in the next section of this report.
