I would always say to my mom, that’s why I get so excited about things. I’d say, you know, in high school I was like that and I didn’t want to go to class, but my mom said, “No, you shouldn’t feel like that. You want to play and if you want to go to school, you should. If you don’t, you can’t.” And that’s how I got into jazz. Even as a teenager I felt like I wanted to get up there and play music. So you have to take what you’re taught and apply it to reality or don’t do it with your passion. If you do it with passion you’ll do everything it takes to succeed.
In a way, I feel that it’s actually easier to learn how to play something than if you have no idea how to play it, because you think you were born with a great instrument and you don’t know how to play it. I don’t think that’s good! It’s definitely better to learn how to play something than to never learn how to play it. If you’re not going to learn how to play it, that’s a big problem.
As I’m teaching, I know that I want to help kids know the piano and the saxophone, not just learn to play one instrument and think this is great. There’s a lot of good music that you can learn and it’s not so easy to be just a musician. Because this is what we were taught in the first place. We’re trying to be cool people so we can wear cool
