First, you have to teach your children that the way you practice is how you learn. There are many different kinds of lessons. If these don’t work, try the two following suggestions:
– Play with kids, playing in the kitchen or a bedroom.
– Play with adults at home.
– Take a piano class or lessons (if you’re a first timer) in-person.
Second, you need to get them to learn the basic fingerings, notes and techniques necessary to play simple instruments. There are various ways to do this. If this doesn’t work, try the following suggestions:
– Play with kids, playing in the kitchen or a bedroom.
– Learn the music using only the piano keys.
– Play with adults at home.
Third, try practicing with some of your favorite classical music recordings.
Fourth, learn to play the chord structures of the various music.
Fifth, learn to play simple and complex melody lines.
Sixth, learn to play simple scales (like major scale).
Seventh, learn two or three piano scale patterns of any sort.
Eighth, practice using the most common piano chord progressions.
Ninth, practice using popular music.
Tenth, learn to play more of the music you’re familiar with.
Eleventh, practice using the music you already know.
Finally, you will have to practice the piano over time. Practice is a lot more relaxing than doing it on your own.
What do I play?
I’m currently a senior lecturer at Trinity College, London. A big part of my research is to discover which aspects of education are most useful, and how they can be used to enrich the student experience.
In recent years I have become less interested in the ‘narrative’ aspect of teaching and much more interested in how we can use teaching to enhance the student experience. I’m currently looking for new ways of combining teaching with learning.
What is your favourite part of teaching:
Teaching – I like the whole teaching process in that I really like seeing how the kids learn, and the students. I also enjoy the interaction between the students and the teacher – and that’s why I enjoy teaching some people to surf. (I’m not joking.)
