I play for two reasons. First, I’m not allowed to have one hand on the keys of the instrument, so I have to play with two hands. Second, for some reason with the guitar, it was more difficult to get the same sound that I have with my guitar through my piano, so I had to make a switch between them.
Are your songs on record?
I’m very glad you asked!
I heard that your piano was played by the composer Albert Lister.
Yes, I played on some of the songs on his album, and yes, his wife was very good, and she had an incredible voice.
How did your brother-in-law end up playing piano for you?
He had a great friend who worked at the label, and he decided to start teaching you. That’s how he met me. (laughs) He was teaching me how to play and stuff like that. A lot of his music is kind of like mine.
When you met him, what did he teach you that you’re playing now?
He taught me a lot about playing music. He played great piano, but he didn’t learn it well, and as you can hear on “Tough Times” he doesn’t know his “A” chords. I started playing with music about ten years later, when I was about sixteen. (laughs) I guess he had some influences from the older guys on his label as well and things like that. (laughs)
Where did you begin playing piano on the piano?
I started when I got a little drunk on the beach when I was in high school. I remember thinking, “Hey! I want to play this stupid piano!” So I took it home and set it under the bed. (laughs) I don’t know how they got us. I don’t know how they got me. But we just got together. (laughs)
How old were you at the time?
Sixth Grade.
When your first album was released?
My first album was called “Cottonmouth Bob” and my first record was called “D.M.P.”
Have you ever thought about releasing another album?
I was thinking about doing one again, and I would do it in a jazzed up sort of way. So far I haven’t done one. But I don’t know what to do; how far I can push it. I
