This is a common question and the short answer is I think at least six or seven months for any individual student to really become comfortable with classical piano.
You learn the piano and get good.
You start learning a lot of pieces.
You are going out for concerts regularly.
You have a good teacher for a while.
Then, after you have become really comfortable with classical piano and the piano is part of your regular musical life, there is a period of time between the first concert performance in your town and when you are in college where your piano is going to be an afterthought.
Here are the six stages:
Stage I is where you are totally new and there is nothing going on around you, you are just playing through everything and thinking, “I know what I’m doing”, but nothing in the world tells you.
Stage II is when you are playing a concert but your teacher is not telling you what that concert is going to be like, just tell him you are going to play something and he should prepare you.
Stage III is when you are playing with other people and your teacher is letting you in there.
Stage IV is when you are with a partner and you are teaching them, you are learning from their experience and they are trying to teach you too.
Stage V is when you have become a professional and your parents and teachers come and see you play and tell you how to do it and you have to take it seriously.
Stage VI is when you have become very good and people think the concert hall is a really nice place to play, there is music in the streets to be found, but what you really want to play, is classical music.
Stage VII or even stage IV is when people start noticing that you are not only good but that you are good for classical.
Stage VIII is when you have reached the stage where you are not going to be embarrassed to play a classical piece.
Stage X is when you are really good and people start asking you how much it took you to play a piece and you get a lot of money when they pay for your performance.
