HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A lawyer for a Connecticut lawmaker accused of lying to federal agents in a failed attempt to keep his son from being charged with raping a child is alleging that the scandal is “a political ploy to silence any criticism from a member of Congress.”
The Connecticut Post reports former Rep. Dan Malloy, 70, and his son, Scott (Chip) Malloy, 38, have been charged by prosecutors with making false statements under oath and making false statements to federal agents about a 2008 sexual assault.
Dan Malloy said on the House floor Thursday that his son’s actions were “absolutely tragic” and “something he wants to overcome as best he can.” His son has since been released from prison.
Prosecutors initially charged Scott Malloy with committing “unlawful sex acts” and then accused the younger Malloy of making false statements.
The newspaper reports that the second charge is false statements to investigators — the former was used in the federal charges against the younger Malloy — and that the elder Malloy may have committed perjury with the first charge as well.
An arrest warrant for Dan Malloy is still outstanding and he is due in court next month.
