Lionsgate will release The Nice Guys on February 11 in 3D, which is the best-of-three round of the Cannes Film Festival. It’s the first R-rated comedy to reach the festival’s festival circuit, but the studio is not looking to make it a box office hit.
“With The Nice Guys, we decided to open it as a three-round release, with the second and third rounds being R-rated, and we’ll be seeing whether it can live up to the original expectation,” said Dave Hollis, president of Lionsgate. “At this early stage of the development process, we don’t have any specific release date set.”
The movie, which stars Charlie Murphy, Michael Cera, Chris Klein and Michael Caine, debuts after a 10-day opening at the Sundance and Chicago Film Festivals.

The trailer released Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival depicts a guy in a suit trying to pick up the wife of a man he’s dated for years. As his woman friend, played by the U.K. actress Joanna Cassidy, enters to tell the guy the good news, he throws his wife against the table – and that’s when things get ugly.
In his debut at Cannes, The Nice Guys will compete with movies from French rival Cineflex and British film company Canal Plus.

Lionsgate also is releasing three films by American director David Ayer, a followup to 2014’s The Fighter, which grossed nearly $60 million at the international box office, with another title in preproduction.
