A study released after President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday revealed that Americans are less optimistic than when the president took office in 2009, and they blame the high-income earners, such as themselves, for this downward trend in optimism.
Just 34% of Americans said in 2009 that the economic and job outlook were good, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll released Tuesday. That has gone down to 23% in today’s poll, conducted online and by phone between Jan. 22 and Jan. 26 of this year. This represents a decline of 5 percentage points since 2008, and also a decrease of 5 points since the AP first asked Americans in 2001 whether the economy and jobs were getting better or worse.
The report also found a decline from the last survey in the percentage of Americans saying that unemployment, the share of people who are actively looking for jobs, is too high.
“The economic recovery is still not strong,” said Gary Burtless, president of the centrist Brookings Institution, who helped conduct the last AP-GfK poll. “The fact that the economy as measured by the Consumer Price Index has actually weakened at the same time as the unemployment rate is a reflection of the fact that the recovery from the financial crisis has not yet delivered the strong growth levels needed to meet the demand and growth that the economy needs to be in a position to sustain.”
The survey found that Americans’ optimism about the future has been slipping, particularly because of rising inequality, high unemployment and an increasing sense of economic insecurity among the top 1%. The survey found that the number of Americans reporting an increasingly pessimistic outlook was up slightly from 2009, though it remained below the recent high of 36.5 percent in 2011, according to Gallup.
While Americans see their standard of living slipping, an Associated Press-GfK survey released Tuesday found that many are more optimistic that they will have enough living space before the year is out.
