A pair of new studies shed fresh light on what causes schizophrenia and identify a major component of the illness that needs to be identified.

The studies, published in Nature and The Lancet Neurology journals today that used new technologies to map the human brain, are part of the growing body of work showing that the genetic component in schizophrenia has multiple genes — one for every type of neuron, and other genes to which one is particularly susceptible, a condition called gene-environment interaction.
The studies — which used a method called diffusion tensor imaging — offer a powerful way to identify regions that have genetic linkages to psychosis. The researchers said the study showed that people who had one or more genes involved in the brain’s electrical activity were more sensitive to the symptoms of schizophrenia.
“Understanding what genes cause schizophrenia and how the brain is affected contributes to the understanding of the illness itself,” Dr. Daniela Rus, one of the researchers at the Karolinska Institute School of Medicine and one of the study’s lead authors, said in a news release.
The findings also may help to clarify how schizophrenia might be treated. One type of medication designed to treat the disorder could be used to block a gene called L3RP20 from being expressed.
“The work we’ve done today will help us to develop drugs to block the expression of L3RP20,” said study first author Maria Jönsson, a Ph.D. student at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
L3RP20 is a gene that allows neurons to transmit electrical signals to a large portion of the brain, but it also carries genetic information that is involved in the formation of schizophrenia.
“These findings add to what we already know about the biological mechanisms of the disease,” said first author David Haier, an investigator at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
