It depends where you live, and the resources and support you have to live there. If you live in one of the major cities of Europe, a great school like one of the prestigious international schools such as the University of Munich, or a great regional college like one of the top two public universities in Germany, you should have no difficulty finding a piano. If you live in the world’s biggest country, like the UK or France, like a good regional college or city school like University College London, then your child could still be on the street in the next five years. There are also piano schools all around the world, where piano is part of the curriculum.
But where should my child start from, then?
There is a lot to consider, and I recommend you take time to explore other places around you, and to decide where your child should start to learn to play the piano. In any case, before you make a decision, see what the piano is going to be like at home, and figure out its strengths and weaknesses. Look for schools who have the proper facilities. If there are not many piano classes in your town or area, look for a larger school that has special attention to piano, so you know your child’s teacher, and can keep up with any changes to the school.
When my son started to learn to play the piano, he was 13 years old, so he wasn’t even 3 years old at that point.
Why not start at 3 or 4 years old? This will work really well in a bigger school such as a university. You will have the teacher, you can help your child with his practice and even teach him things to play. It also means your child will have more time to develop in other areas. The piano is such a powerful instrument, and your child already has an ability to read music, something that will help as he grows. Your child will also go on to attend a more advanced school, which will focus primarily on music theory and musical theory, or perhaps even a piano academy, where the piano is in much greater emphasis.
This is why I believe it is okay to start at 3 or 4 years old, but there are also very good reasons to start before 4-5 years old or even earlier.
