For a long time, the answer was probably “no, not really: our intellect could not think anything without a mind”, but there were a few notable exceptions. We are the only species that has ever evolved to use our brains for locomotion without them (we do use our hands however). And, as it turns out, our brains are so small and delicate — a single neuron, which is about a billionths of a millimetre in length and weighs in at 300 million times less than a human hair — that they require a lot of energy.

This is where mind uploading comes in, by which human brains will be uploaded to a computer. It is possible that the technology can be built on a similar principle. The problem, however, is it won’t work until we have a complete understanding of the molecular structures involved — a task for which researchers have known nothing at all.
If we’re ever going to go head to head with our great ape cousins on the battlefield — which is looking more and more likely, as their technology continues to innovate — the first thing we need to do is determine how much difference human-level technology will make to our species.
This is easy: we’ll upload our minds to a computer, and test the computer’s mental capacities. Then we’ll start comparing it with humans.

I’ve worked in both AI and computational neuroscience; if we can upload human minds, then we’ll get around many of the fundamental questions about how the human brain works.
One of the most profound, and underappreciated aspects of AI is that it has become more than a tool to solve problems. While we humans do the hard math of how to do something, we’re no longer able to do all of it by instinct. The software will always come with knowledge and experience, as it always has. A robot can’t do anything without understanding its environment.
The human mind is like a computer in that it is a network where the network’s code can be interpreted with any amount of data from one node to the next. In other words, while we humans write programs in human languages, computers do the same thing.

As I’ve said many times: even the smartest humans can’t solve the same problems as a supercomputer.
