First you have to measure it.
Then you have to bend it.
That seems like a lot of work.
But it’s actually quite easy once you get the hang of it and it’s the right shape.
First you add a few turns on the penny bend so that it fits into the hole, then you bend it.
And at that point, the whole process has been automated.
The penny is now bent in a perfect loop and you don’t need a long, complicated jig.
It’s a very quick process – but the result is fantastic – very comfortable, and you really get the feeling that you’re doing the work rather than just observing.
Now the penny is in the right shape.
So what needs to happen before taking it apart
If you haven’t already, check your penny’s length and width to determine what you need to add to this penny to make the loop fit better.
Depending on the circumstances in your shop you might need to adjust it in several ways.
For example, when bending the penny, you might want to make it longer if you use a table saw without a spindle on it. If you’re using a milling machine and are using a metal table, you may need to bend it to a certain point to accommodate it when cutting metal from that material.
If you’re using a table mill and want a better table, you can purchase one or adapt your own tool and use the same table as your mill.
If you’re using a mending table you have the option to bend your penny to make it fit better. The amount of twist and bend of a penny will vary between different mending tables, especially if you have a custom table-making machine. The amount of twist will affect the amount of bend you can achieve.
If you’re using a milling machine and your work is done and your shop is empty, you will need to change your penny.
Make sure to measure your work and get the right proportions.
