It is a trick, an incantation, what have you. I don’t use magic tricks for the pleasure of doing them. Magic tricks are for the masses.
As a black belt in jiu jitsu, your life is a mixture of hard work, hard training, and hard magic tricks. Do you have any secrets to success?
When you work the art you train your body and focus on the most important aspect of being a blackbelt — your mind. As a blackbelt you are trained at the highest level in technique, technique, and technique. However, to succeed in our art we must understand psychology and psychology is the key to everything. So to succeed you must master the magic of psychology.
Your videos “The Art Of Jiu Jitsu” and “The Magic Of Jiu Jitsu” are considered to be your two greatest teachings in the world of grappling. Now that you are a famous blackbelt, how did you meet people, and how did you get into the community?
I met people. I was very lucky because most of the people are real guys, they are good. But I met a few bad girls (and they are not like the guys). But there are also many good and funny people. I would like to say that my community is very supportive to the point where no matter how bad I am going or how big my problems are, somebody is always helping me. It is not only the community but also other instructors that support me. And so I can say this community deserves all the praise I have.
Who are some of your most memorable instructors?
Well I must say that I really like some of the instructors. There are not many of them but there are some real guys. But I must also give a big thank you to some other instructors who have been in my life very long time and have done really good work. The most memorable instructors are those who teach me the art of Jiu Jitsu. The same goes the other way – real teachers whom I have watched for years, have given good advice, have been really good, just for their encouragement and for the knowledge and the love as a teacher.
What motivates you at the end of a hard year?
What motivates me is to overcome, that’s what motivates me. I will always continue to work hard to show what makes me the best. And the same goes to my family and friends.
