The first thing we had to do was to determine the amount of weight that we were going to be using to levitate each weight in the pencil, since we would have to use a pencil that was about as heavy as our pencils.
We figured you would need at least 25 grams when levitating it by hand, and 25 grams when levitating it by the pencil. How heavy is 100 grams? There would have to be enough space inside the pencil that we could easily get the ball back into the holder, so we wouldn’t have to worry about that.
We found that you would need about 80 grams to levitate one pencil, and around 40 grams to levitate eight pencils of the same weight.
Is weight a concern for the levitating method?
We were very careful when we first used our pencils, not to take a pencil in the air and make it fall. What we did did was have a sheet of paper covered in an adhesive so that we could see if the pencil had fallen anywhere at all.
We used that to keep track of where and how the ball could fall when we used our pencil. In the case of pencils, you can just think about the weight of the pencil itself, and not worry about where it is when you are using it.
How long would it take when using the pencil with an electrical system?
We had some pencils with low-voltage batteries in them that were really great for holding on the wall and being used, but it took at least two weeks to get the ball from one pencil to another with these batteries.
To test how well our pencils worked, we had them levitated with a low-voltage battery just like they used to be. What happened is that our pencils just kept moving to where we put them, like we were reading a book! This was the first time someone had ever levitated a pencil using this method, and it worked really well…
How long does the levitated pencil last before it has to be removed?
We thought the pencil would last about 10 days, but we only kept ours in the fridge for a weekend. You can see in the photos how quickly the pencil changed color because it was getting very warm, and we wanted to make sure that it would be ready to use again. You can also see that the pencil isn’t completely dry when you first put it in the holder.
