The basic game is played over an 80-card deck in a standard game on a 15×15 matrix. The players add more and more cards to play to try and win. For example, you can either play one random card that does nothing – just like real Magic – or you can add some random spells that change the cards you play for you. How Does It Work?
Magic The Gathering is a two-player game, played over 12 rounds. The strategy starts before you are even able to get out of the box. Each round of one player gets 8 cards (2 red, 1 white, 1 black, 1 land), while the other gets 10 cards (4 red, 4 white, 4 black, 1 land). They start the game by drawing 8 cards each, and each round begins with a player being dealt a card. Then the players continue to play cards until they all have 6 cards in their hand, or they have nothing to play but an empty land.
Each round consists of two parts. The first part is a mulligan as each player keeps the top 7 of their deck from one phase to the next. As a result they get to choose to either add a card from their hand into their hand, or give that same card to their opponent. That player gets to choose what their first and last two cards are. After they draw one or two more cards during the round, or if they have nothing to play, they draw one or two additional cards. The player with the most cards in their hand wins the game.
The mulligan phase also involves deciding which spell or card to play from your hand and how to get it into play during the next phase.
