David Blaine (born June 8, 1975) is an American strength and conditioning coach, best known for helping to build a number of bodybuilding and bodyweight training programs.


Blaine was born in San Antonio, Texas to a family of French immigrants. As a child, he had a passion for sports and started training with a pair of sandbaggy, steel-toe shoes on his heels as a child, later moving on to shoes on the end of a wooden stick. In addition to training for athletic endeavors, Blaine took up sports that would get him into a lot of trouble from the age of 12, such as swimming and bowling. Although Blaine still goes by the name of Blaine the Bodybuilder, he has since come to identify himself as David Blaine the Master.

Born the child of a teacher, Blaine spent most of his childhood in Louisiana, although he would eventually move to Florida so he could train at CrossFit Central in Fort Lauderdale. Blaine received his Bachelors in Exercise Science from Virginia Military Institute, and Master of Sport and Exercise Science from The University of Michigan.

After taking up exercise, Blaine moved to Colorado and began working for CrossFit, where he now does his exercises at the University of Colorado Denver. After winning the Mr. Universe title in 2006, Blaine went on to win one of two other Mr. Universe trophies in 2007 and 2008 for his competitive wrestling and bodybuilding accomplishments.

What was Blaine’s biggest challenge as a strength and conditioning coach?

As both a father and a coach, Blaine has faced several obstacles in his career. The first was losing his father in early childhood (his mother left him before he graduated from high school), so Blaine had to learn his lesson pretty early. During his father’s final days, Blaine was forced to confront his father’s bodybuilding career; his father had been one of Blaine’s greatest role models for many years and had inspired him with his enthusiasm for his physical feats of strength.

The second is, of course, the work-out and training schedule, because Blaine was always the youngest of those who worked during his father’s bodybuilding career. Blaine would spend the better part of a week at CrossFit Central. This is no small undertaking, as Blaine typically trained for two to three hours a day each.
