I know, it sounds dumb – but I know you’re thinking about your game. The magic world isn’t just a sandbox. The magic world has rules that have to be followed. For those that aren’t aware, Magic takes the game of Magic and distills it down to the core concepts of how a game works.
For example, let’s say for the sake of this hypothetical situation, you were to play a game in which “the best deck in the game is played”. That said, it wouldn’t be the best deck, since there are other decks that can beat it, and the best deck in the game is defined with reference to one and the same deck. I say that to make it clear that there, you can play any deck, and that deck is defined for the purposes of MTG’s internal rules and rules of the game.
I don’t mean to sound like I’m saying a player could play any deck in the game, but I am stating that a player that wants to play a game, doesn’t want to play the cards that can beat him.
The way MTG works is that a player is given a card, plays it, and gets a counter. I don’t want to over exaggerate, so I use the term “counter” in a very literal sense. A counter has to be a card that is not in the game. A counter is defined by its absence. A counter is not a card with a power or toughness or mana cost.
One example is a Goblin Balloon. The card does something to the graveyard – and we like that – but it can’t interact with the game’s rules outside of its own ability. A counter is not a card with a power or toughness or mana cost.
Another example of a card which can’t affect the rules of the game outside of its ability is Black Lotus. The card is in the game, it has a counter and can’t interact with the rules of the game outside of its abilities. So an artifact is defined by its inability to interact with the rules of the game. While Black Lotus and Cavern still have their own internal rules, they’re more defined by their interaction with the rules of MTG.
These two examples are just some of the most common cards that have restrictions on them to a degree. These are the things you have to pay attention to in order to make Magic the most fun experience in the entire game.
