Mind reading is, of course, a very real superpower. So I think the question we should ask is: Do we have enough technology that we can identify all these people in the universe, who are using their powers, who are using their minds to manipulate these things? Would we want that to be in the hands of those who think there is a moral equivalence between a person doing what they tell you and someone stealing or robbing you? Because that is how people use their powers.
If we have enough technology to get at that question, I’m not sure what it is. If we are in a place where we have enough technology for mind reading, that doesn’t seem to me to solve the problem, does it?
Why do you think the government keeps the secret?
Because of the money. That’s my own view. But if it’s not for money, why not give it out to the whole world? There are some really, really smart people in government who would know about it. The problem is, you can’t talk about it much, for obvious reasons, because it’s going to be used against everybody.
The government is always very concerned that the people who are going to be involved in mind reading are never going to talk about it. And that can put them in an awkward position. You’re never going to tell the press, and then the public will turn on you.
So why don’t we make some secret recordings of these conversations? I’ve heard some people think that you might be able to do it yourself, or we could record these conversations, or one of the government people could get access to them and give them to the press or someone else?
No. What we’re doing is a very big experiment in collaboration. We are asking the public to make tapes of the whole conversation in a way that it wouldn’t be able to leak to anybody. It would be one tape, and it would come back as the recording. The government would be able to get access to the source and make a transcript of all the tape. Those transcripts would go back to us, and we would have the transcript that could be read by other people. In some sense, that gives us control over what we say in public, and it gives us the right to be able to say there’s some stuff that we believe in and that other people think shouldn’t be said publicly.
So what’s the deal with the “unanimous” consent thing?
