I was fascinated by the ancient world, and the mythology of the Celtic peoples. So, when I was 14, I decided I wanted to write an epic fantasy, something different, something more fantasy like. When I read the works of Theoden and Pelargir, they immediately struck a chord with me. I wanted to make a story that wasn’t just about a guy who turns into a dragon and gets his wings. The stories of the Celtic people were about people who were strong and brave and strong-willed, people who could take risks and make something of themselves.
In writing The Song of Ice and Fire, what kind of magic does Cersei seem to represent? Does she come from a magical family that inspires her to be good in the face of temptation and evil in the face of temptation?
Her family is a family of heroes. There’s nothing less admirable than the people with dark and wicked hearts. It’s a family that loves its son, and so they are always willing to help him if it helps him. And with magic, when he loses his hand, the brothers of Eddard are not going to give up. And they don’t. I mean, one family would be like, “We’ll give up this hand!” But the others are always going to be there if they feel that their son has failed. It’s the same with people who have lost their children. They’re going to want to continue until the kid returns. And because you have this family that loves you, they are willing to help you in a time of adversity, to help you to the point where you can do it. The magic has always meant that.
Cersei and Tyrion also have magic skills. Could they have a chance to help each other when Cersei leaves the scene?
That’s exactly what they have to do. The moment they leave the scene, Cersei is going to want to have a chance to be left alone by Tyrion. It’s an essential part of the story line that the two of them need to get away safely. Cersei’s not going to let it go if she can help it. I think the very last scene of the book, when Cersei leaves and Tyrion gets to have time alone, there’s the final word she says: “I would have liked them to stay with me.” That’s, for me, what’s so powerful about the Cersei character. She’s the very strong, determined woman who refuses to give
