They are, in a sense, what I wish I could be. The social dance community is about finding a way to live, to be with others, and to laugh, with people, about anything. There is a lot of social dancing available for every sense of dance. People’s personalities are a great barometer of their dance style. There was, of course, lots of social dancing in my childhood. There was a long-running annual Halloween event at my high school in San Pedro where our costume was all the girls’ colors, and my brother and I were the only ones who went as the girls.
It wasn’t as much fun going as much as I wished it could be. I never liked what you might call a “hippie” thing, or a hippy dance, that kind of thing. It wasn’t until I got to San Francisco, I think, that I began dancing socially. One of my best friends and one of the guys that I’d met in college, he danced the exact same way as I did at San Pedro. I had to figure out for myself what I wanted. But then I found out, it’s totally different, so I started to dance social dance. Now I go on a lot of social dance dates.
Social dance in San Francisco is a lot more “mainstream” than in San Diego, you know? My best friends used to dance in the same groups at night, and they’d call it “solo parties”. Nowadays I see lots of different types of social dancing. People in the group are not a homogenous group. Everyone moves. It’s a place to be.
What was the one thing you never learned to do? I never practiced any of my moves, but I did a lot of teaching. Sometimes it would take me 10 or 12 hours to do a move so a teacher would come in and do it in 20 minutes. For example, the whole way I moved was a double-time flip from start to finish. That’s a kind of twist, but it was one thing that I tried, but I thought of what I could do better. It took quite a while before I got the hang of it.
What other dances do you like? I really like some of the hip-hop dance groups, because if you have a group of people who have learned from the same source, it’s quite a group. I like the big dance groups. I have learned quite a few kinds, but I would prefer it
