Social dance is a type of community dance. We dance together as a community, and are able to relate to each other. When you dance this kind of social dance with other people, you become more like a family. When we dance, we are all one family. People need to come together to social dance, to socialize and to build up that social bonds.
Where do you see this in the coming years?
For sure, it can happen much faster than people think. I hope by the time we get to 2030-2020, that people really take a stand on this social dance. It’s an issue of social equality and how to get social equality.
Social dance could actually become a cultural movement, at least among people of color and women.
Do you think it could ever be socially acceptable for an African-American man to come out and dance with a woman and feel comfortable?
There would have to be some form of acknowledgement from people of color saying, “Hey, this is something we do, and you can go and do it, too.” And then we would be on the same stage.
Who does a “dancer” look like?
You see African-American ladies with red afros, black guys with dreads, white dudes with big white heads, black girls with little black hair — the whole spectrum.
How could that shift be achieved?
Dancers will have to understand that they are doing their part to be involved in social change. That’s what this whole new generation is saying. If you’re going to be a dancer, you have to be involved in social change in some way.
What’s on your calendar for 2016?
I’m really pumped for the American Institute of Black Sociology convention, the national conference on Black history — and I’ll be speaking about dance. I’m also doing a new TV project I’m trying to get ready for, about the Harlem Renaissance and the Harlem Renaissance Dance Theater. I’m excited because I think we actually can do some amazing things now, when we get people who were just born this way to get really into it. And my goal is to go out and socialize and find out where we stand now. We won’t know it right away like we’ll know in 10 years or a century from now. But we’ll see that dance was a great way in which to get this message out, and we can do that again with social dance.
