Social dance challenges can be a way to interact with others in a socially interesting environment, while at the same time cultivating a sense of fun and social confidence. For example, in the “dance show” experience, students collaborate to create a performance.
Are there formal qualifications for the various social dance degrees?
The most formal certificate (the BSC Dance Certificate) is for students to complete as part of their degree, but anyone can participate.
The social dance degrees are offered in many forms: classes, workshops, social dancing, individual, or even community workshops. Most can be taught while wearing a costume and/or dance gear, but formal dance education does not require costume on every class.
Social or community dances involve students in dance with the community—where they perform in an area of interest or in an area where other students gather. For example, “Dance With The Girls” is a workshop in which students dance with students of their gender identity.
Are there requirements for students to participate in social dance classes?
While participating in a regular social dance class requires that you have sufficient knowledge of dance to dance competently, social dance classes are more intensive than regular dance classes.
How many social dance programs are there in Canada?
In 2009, there were 14 dance programs accredited by the SOCD (Social Dance Department).
In that same year, there were 5 dance degrees accredited by the SOCD.
In 2010 there were 5 social dance programs accredited by the SOCD.
There would be approximately 40 dance programs in Canada if all courses are offered in our dance department (including dance education).
In 2011 the number increased, to 15 social dance programs, 6 social dance degrees, and 6 community dances.
