I’ve been dancing since I was four years old. We were very poor. You can’t afford to play outside, it could be a disaster. I used to go to my school dances with my mum. I was a happy-go-lucky kid.
Where do you dance now?
I now live in Stretford, London. I love it there. I have my own dance company. I have a huge dancefloor, about 300 people, just about every night.
If you were a band, whom member would you play?
Probably me. I don’t love all the people – my heart belongs to me. I’ve been playing drumming since I was 6, playing with folk dance in high school too. The music is there for a reason and I think I’ve become quite good at it.
What’s your most unusual memory?
I have a very special feeling in my heart when I see a pregnant woman with an umbilical cord in her belly. It feels like it’s a miracle.

What music did you like growing up?
A lot of classical music, especially Mozart, Handel, Schubert.
If you could have one record, what would it be?
I’m pretty eclectic … I love soul, rock, progressive, jazz, funk. I’m also interested in punk. I play the bass guitar quite well but a lot of the time my drummer plays with a distorted bass.

What are you listening to?
I listen to lots of classic reggae, new-wave … I love music that takes chances and doesn’t conform to the mainstream. That stuff is really exciting. There’s always something new on the radio, you never know when it might come through.
Who are your idols?
I idolise the Beatles, of course, but I am a huge fan of the Rolling Stones. Their music is so infectious and interesting. I’ve only known them for about five years.
Who do you listen to outside the dancefloor?
I listen to a lot of metal music. I love the way they work and their sound.
