In this chart, we saw trends for both dance types and styles. But there was one notable trend that the song “M.I.A.” seemed to suggest: that dance was gaining steam in 2014.

I was surprised by how popular dance was among both men and women. I mean, the same week as “M.I.A.” was the #1 hit by Adele, Katy Perry and Coldplay. But when I dig deeper into the data, the truth was that dance was gaining steam not just among women, but by a huge margin — in fact, almost threefold.
So, what’s behind the surge in popularity? A few things.
We could point a finger at music itself, but we also have to remember that music is an art form, an instrument with a long history that still needs to be embraced or reinvented every few decades. A lot of dance isn’t even about dancing; it’s just the dance music itself and the lyrics, and not the musicians’ voices.
As Michael Smith, a professor of political science at Princeton, writes in his new book “The Dance of Statehood,” dance is a kind of culture:
When dancers join in dance, they are joining in a collective action: They are engaged in a performance they’ve developed for the purposes of a social organization. When they dance for pleasure they are performing for themselves, not just for others. But when the dances were created, people were not seeking pleasure; pleasure was what they wanted to obtain. Now, however, they are seeking pleasure, and to obtain that pleasure, they’re dancing. […] So now a significant proportion of modern American society is dancing — in a sense of public life. It is not a small or trivial fraction of this society.
You can dance for fun, to share a moment (or for pleasure), to celebrate cultural achievements, or to express one’s identity or political beliefs. Dancing has become something that you do in the moment, not something you do once at a time and then put aside.
