Waltz is such a big part of what you do as an actor. It’s the thing you write and rehearse and rehearse and rehearse over and over, where you’re just in the room with people. It’s the thing that comes from the moment. You’re not in a studio, you’re not in a stage, you’re not in a theater, you’re not in a theater rehearsal room. That’s where they go right after.
So, it’s that same creative process, but it’s different in another way. It doesn’t start with rehearsals. It doesn’t start with an acting class or an acting tutor. It’s just that you’re there to have fun, and enjoy yourself.
Was that a challenge?
Yeah. I can’t say no to that. It is. But again, that’s the great thing about Waltz: It’s this amazing thing. It can be done for a living, and you just have to be there. It’s a great place to be.
We asked you to describe all the ways you get into Waltz now.
There are different ways to get into Waltz, right? There’s just what you’re able to do and how you’re able to use it and when you’re able to do it. And once you do it, it’s just like a natural thing.
It’s easy to get into on a screen.
It’s not. Because you have to play it a certain way — and how you do that is just totally up to you. I love the way I’m still learning. I have never been that good in this business. I’ve never been able to be there for six months straight with no scenes and then do that little thing. Because it’s always something new and we want that feeling. There’s just something about Waltz. It’s just so different — it’s like playing a ballad. I just cannot put into words what is so special about Waltz.
You’re a ballad player?
A lot of people ask me that. I never have a line, so maybe I can tell you something. The feeling of Waltz, I can’t even explain it. It’s a feeling you get when you’re in a song that’s your soul. You’re just sitting in front of the piano with people. People just go on and on about this story they want you to tell, and then you’re sitting with them and
