Yes. You’re going to get great talent, but if you don’t produce, then you have no real influence. That sounds self-evident, but how often you meet and interact with that person is what matters. Sometimes when there is a great actor, the rest of us can’t even imagine what he or she could do. But it takes a lot of people. There are going to be some very talented actors.
So you’re saying directors are more important than actors?
Absolutely. With a film, I’d say that a director could come in and out of the movie. I just look at how many great films I’ve watched that are not being directed by people that I knew. I would say they’re out there, and you will find them. What the industry needs in terms of directors—the real power in it—is having writers, directors and a group of production people that understand, that are willing to do whatever it is that you want, whether you’re a producer or a director or whatever.
What can you say about what you like about being a producer and what you don’t?
I mean, I’ve said it before, but I think the biggest thing that I enjoy about producing the way I do is being able to do it in a way that I think creates a better process. Because I’ve seen directors make a really poor job of it. But if you have very good, passionate people producing, then you can get things done.
Do you have a specific style?
We have to be really aggressive. We have no room to slack off. We’re trying to do it and make it great. If we’re having a hard time, we look at it and say, “If they can’t do it then can we?”
You get a lot of feedback on the process.
Every script goes through a lot of revision. It’s a process that we live, or we’ve lived, with. I have a lot of people that I work with who really love making movies. I feel like they have a natural ability not to have any hesitation. We’re very honest. They know what movie they want to make before we meet them. I’ve known people who will literally make a movie and come back weeks later and say, “Oh my God. That was beautiful.” We will ask that person and then the next time we meet them it may be different. But the point is, we’re saying, “We know
