No. Production is usually done on the same person, but not always. In fact, almost all TV directors must be able to produce — at minimum, a couple episodes. There may be exceptions, but that won’t be an excuse to refuse a job, because it’s a difficult job to get out of.
How often do you do the first pass, and then do final edits?
We typically record for around a month before shooting, just for the basic storyboard and layout, which will be a different story from what you see on camera. We generally do not prep final cuts until there is a great deal of editing still to do. If you want to be a director in television, you need to edit. But we don’t do it. And you don’t. You have to work around an audience that is constantly adjusting. It can take months. That’s why, if you’re shooting a show and want to make a TV show, you do the bulk of the editing, at least in my experience. I’m lucky to work with my best friends who have been on a TV series.
What are some TV shows you would want to direct if you could make any?

The only show I would love to direct is “The Sopranos,” but it’s not realistic because [the show’s creator] David Chase has passed away. I would love to direct the original three series because they’re my favorites. But you have to remember that you have to watch what you do in order to do it. The most important thing is to
