I’ve had this experience. That was when I was still in my early twenties. And I was living in LA, with my sister, and we were very close. Every day I thought about what I wanted to do for a career. So one day, I said to my sister, who had been listening the whole day and was thinking about doing this documentary stuff, that I wanted to be a filmmaker. And in just two months, my sister is making a documentary about me.
How did she know you, and how did she connect you with this documentary?
She emailed me. She emailed me just on YouTube and called me and said, “Hey, I’m making this documentary about you.” So I said okay and it was very similar to my life story, and it kind of became my story. And of course her film ended up being so much more than I expected. It has been the best day of my life.
So I don’t know about your life story, but I read a quote somewhere, “It’s the little things in life that count. Because if you don’t do the little things, you won’t know what’s important.” So that stuck with me at some point. Did you see The Secret Life of the American Teenager? Are you the perfect example?
So it was the first movie that I saw ever. I was just 16, but I knew it was going to be a classic and a film that would come to the forefront of cinema and it kind of started with this beautiful shot, which was just an actual sunset on a rooftop in New York, from what I read as a teenager. Then I saw the story that ended up being told, and it was this beautiful little story.
Did it ever feel like you were in a time warp from your life story?
No, it was very similar. I just wanted to make a movie. If I have kids and have a family, this is something that’s going to have a little more meaning. And I just felt like it had to be about me, the person that I wanted to be and the kind of relationship that would have been between my family and mine, you know. And it was a personal journey.
What is the first book that inspired you?
A novel that I read and loved. It was a very long book and it was really, really dark, and it was about a lot of people and the way it was viewed, with violence. It
