It’s like anything. You have to work hard. My work ethic is so good and the motivation is so good, but I just love working. The biggest things in life are the things you do with the same drive and the same excitement.
Have you ever experienced any setbacks in your filmmaking journey?
There have been obstacles. When I became a dad, I had no idea what I was going to do. I couldn’t even find an accountant. I needed a lawyer to handle the budget. But I got through that because that gave me a bigger drive. It made me go beyond my limits. It made me work harder. It made me focus on the process.
It’s interesting to compare you and others working in the medium, such as filmmaker Ben Shourd, who started working on features in 2007. How was your relationship with him? Is he really the exception? Or is this something you guys do?
With Ben, I learned a lot. There are so many guys just like Ben. They’re also going against the grain and not getting what they want, and their process is different. But Ben is a real, genuine guy. He works his ass off and is doing amazing things.
Can you tell us how the production of Watch the Throne fits into your overall plan for the year?
We started working on the whole picture in the summer and it was time to start doing more projects in the fall. We’re in the middle of casting now and the main goal is to find just the right actors for what we want to do.
I just had the opportunity for a Skype interview with the character of the character of Tyrion Lannister. Do you have a favorite character from the show?
I really enjoy playing Cersei. I don’t watch the TV series when I’m doing her, but if you had asked me when I was 19 what character I’d liked best, I wouldn’t have said Arya Stark.
I love everyone in that show except that girl who was played by Lena Headey. She is a very talented actress but she just didn’t seem to have a personality.

I’d love to have that part but I have a hard time believing that would happen.
