Is Filmmaker the same as director? – Explore Filmmaking: From Script To Screen

Filmmaker and director are two very different things. Filmmaker is a position, director is a skill. It’s not a real job, it’s more a role than a job. It’s a thing you have to develop. I’m a director. I didn’t become a director out of the blue. It’s a position I’ve been working with so I don’t look at my life as a series of jobs.

What is your opinion on female directors in Hollywood?

I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. Women in Hollywood today are not as strong as they should be, and in a sense, they’re more vulnerable than they should be. But that’s on all of us men, all of us. I don’t think they have to look at themselves in some way to know that is not the case today. That’s where the women of today are making their own choices.

Who do you have to look at?

I think you’re dealing with the wrong person, because no one else can judge them. Maybe if you really want people to judge these women, you have to look at that person, not at the things they do.

What is your opinion on female-owned businesses?

Women have really done something to help their own communities. We’re all very fortunate to live in a period with very strong communities, where we have a lot of things in common. I think we’ve helped to make it one big family, instead of one lot, and I’m very happy about it. In the old days, if you wanted any of the stuff that was the center [of a family] to exist, you had to go find it — which is great. And you knew there would be people who took care of it, but that was really what made it one big family. But the thing I miss today is that way of thinking. Where the only ones that had a say would go to them in a sense.

How do you feel about the way women are portrayed in mainstream media?

I’m happy about women having a say in things, and I’m sorry that some of us don’t think that way. It’s not me saying that. I’m just saying. If I were a man, I’d probably say the same thing about mainstream media. But the fact is that all of you men, even if you say, “It’s OK for women to have opinions,” there will always be a few of
