To be a filmmaker you need to have a few things in your life that you can rely on. But for me, I can’t do that without being in New York City because I have to keep my work going—and being a filmmaker is so much work. I mean you think the world is all of our friends, our girlfriends and our family and our family, and then it’s all of that. You want people to see how hard you have it. I remember being a little bitchy and getting yelled at and called all the names you can imagine, but I’ve learned over time not to be too proud of my accomplishments.

You are known to be a writer and a director. Was that always a part of your life?

I wrote a movie and released it.

In general, what movies or books do you really listen to now that you’re in the public eye?

I read a lot, but really focus on the work. I’ve made my share of personal projects, and a great lot of those are books. If I had to pick one, it would be The Wipers—it was a great book.

What are some other great books you’ve been reading?

I’ve just read The Tao of Pooh by Neil Gaiman. That’s really good. It’s kind of like fairy tales: It’s like a comic book, it’s like fairy tales but it’s really about human nature.

What books inspired you as a filmmaker?

I was inspired by so many different sources. The book that inspired me was David Lynch, Twin Peaks, and especially the short films. I learned how to direct short films and then I would get a call or a phone call from someone else and they have a great short story. It’s the art of storytelling, so I would spend a week or two working on a film that was very similar. I’m also always going to go back to books. I love The Catcher in the Rye, so I can’t go anywhere else.

You’ve recently directed three movies with director Todd Haynes. How’s it being a director with somebody else?

When you’re out on the road you get more of a sense of family and relationship, but there’s a tremendous amount of individuality and it’s challenging, too, because everybody is so different and you have very little control over it—that’s what makes it exciting. You have to keep trying to
