What is the average salary for a filmmaker? – Filmmaking Career

With such a low budget, there really is never an excuse to pay your director an obscene sum of money. But you do need to pay them well. Let’s take these percentages and give you a general concept of how much it costs to bring a film to the big screen.

What does it cost to make a studio movie?

The cost of making a “studio” film is roughly $10 million. In other words, $1 million to make you laugh your way through a comedy, and $400,000 to make you angry. As an aside, $1 million will get you more laughs than $100 million. You might think that is low but that is actually true.

How does a filmmaker make money on a limited budget?

There are a few different ways to make money on a small budget.

1. Make it yourself: Many young filmmakers are making their own films. If you are like the majority and are a young person, you will be more inclined to work yourself into a passion for your own work. If your ideas are new and different that can often turn out poorly. I saw this happening first hand with my friend Kevin Smith and his first feature movie “Superman Returns.” Kevin’s first film went against all odds and got a great response from audiences. Even though it turned out well, it wasn’t going to break the bank until a major director arrived to direct it. Kevin went to Warner Brothers to get his money raised and eventually the studio brought in Gary Ross to direct and he did so well with it that he had a great deal of experience directing and being an executive producer on independent films. After this he returned to film his own “Superman Returns” and then in 2009 he started a new family comedy called “Baby Driver.” He made all these at a cost of $5 million. With that kind of effort you can make a lot of extra money. But again the budget can be a problem. How to get more money?

2. Work with a major studio: Another way for an indie filmmaker to make money is to partner with a major studio or other major producer of a big budget. This can be done with any type of movie including TV shows which can make a lot of money on a small budget. This usually works better and offers better financing which can lead to better results.
