There’s a strong argument for working on screenplays. As a writer, you write in a way that people go, “Man that’s pretty good,” “That’s really interesting,” and ultimately, if you are a movie producer, you will help set the stage and tell a story. As a filmmaker, what you are trying to do is to develop a vision and tell that story in the best way. It is not all about writing, though.
What do you want to change in the screenwriters contract?
I think the biggest change is that a screenwriter needs to be a writer. One of the many changes to the agreement is that the studio is still the gatekeeper and they keep the actors and directors in a corner. The studio really helps you get your vision into the script. So now you have a better chance of getting it out there, but I don’t like the role model thing.
I think if you have the ability to tell an interesting story, to craft an important story, then there’s a chance it will work in any movie. If you can’t tell it, you’re just a storyteller who doesn’t know how to tell it. The movie director is there to help guide your work through the script.
As a screenwriter, can you give us any advice for writers out there who want to make this their career?
I think the only thing you really need to do is keep an open mind. Don’t just be stuck in your room. Take breaks. Get out there. Try some different genres. Look for people who have found success doing different mediums. And as long as you are not going to be like, “I’ll write for the movies,” don’t get too scared of that.
A lot of times, when people are struggling, they try to make that the goal of their life. I think that can be a bad influence.
