Who’s to say that they aren’t? What, then, of a society that doesn’t think that?
I’m not sure this is the best way to deal with a topic that has become so politicised. I think the way to talk about it is to ask all those who are interested in this, whether on the left or the right, whether they think there’s something to be learnt from this or not.
It doesn’t necessarily follow, I’m afraid, that the horses are being kept well or the society is doing what horses do naturally. Certainly it is true that if people had a better understanding of the history of the breeding system they might find that it is not as cruel as people have tended to imply.
There have always been horse breeds that have been less well-trained. A horse could take a fall and break that leg. Horses would have their heads cut or their hooves cut.
So if you were to come to that conclusion, you would think, well, they are less well-trained than this horse? And that’s the point, isn’t it?
Of course, there should be some form of testing that can give us the evidence. I agree we could adopt a more thorough understanding of the history. I don’t see that as being very useful.
Do you think there are lessons for people who want to own horses, and what do you think of those arguments that it’s unfair for people to have an interest in horse breeding which is not to their benefit?
No. My objection to those arguments is, well, the argument that it’s somehow wrong to be interested in horse breeding that wasn’t to your own benefit is, I think, very similar to the argument made by the horse racing industry that it’s wrong to be interested in animal welfare because it hasn’t benefited them personally.
To which I say, yes, but the argument that it’s wrong to be interested in horse breeding that wasn’t to your own benefit is, I would say, an identical objection to that. If your own interest was hurt by going to a horse show, what would you think of the attitude of animal rights activists who went to the show because it gave them a chance to look at animals and then concluded that this was the right thing to do?
To which I say the exact same thing. No, I never thought that that was the right thing to do. I think if the problem was to give pleasure, the horse show was wrong,
