If you’re betting on horses in the race, it works very much like betting when you come to the betting shops. You can use what’s known as a “pre-event book” to tell you exactly what’s coming your way. These books are usually on sale from time to time. These days it’s much more common to find live odds on the Internet. In addition to this, the betting lines you see on the betting sites are generally just the average of the lines they have at their books – not the odds. For example, if there’s a horse named Prince of Wales, it may offer odds of 7:1 and 7% – that’s the average of the book’s odds.
How do I get the racing odds?
If there’s still a gap in the betting lines available before you come over to a betting shop to order the horse odds, you can do what I do (don’t forget to be super careful when doing anything with horses) and ask the betting shop to do that for you. The betting shops usually offer odds by the horse’s name to make the guessing process easier. It’s a good idea to check the betting odds on the horse’s own website, such as that of racing’s Royal Weigh-In Horse Racing Association’s website and the Horse Racing Betting Guide for any horse who’s on the World Cup programme.
What if I get upset with the betting odds?
This is almost never a good thing. It’s usually caused by something else, not by the odds – and even if you think you paid the odds wrong, they shouldn’t charge you.
How can I see the betting odds on a horse in the race?
If the betting shops sell horse book odds themselves, that’s where you should go for the racing odds, if you’ve got the time. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until someone has made the bets.
How do I know if I’m correct, or whether I’m “in the zone”, and whether I should bet?
You’ll usually want to stay calm in the area – don’t look at the horses on the tracks – and be in the zone. In the first few minutes you might get a little excited – the horses come out of their stalls and start to move – and the chances are you might lose money. Once you get in the zone, the horses will go almost as far and will do almost as well as the horses who go in the opposite direction:
