As much as I like to think I am, I don’t think I am good enough at it to be a tipster. My primary source of information about horse racing is, more importantly, in person. This is a lot trickier than it sounds, because I’m not a racer, but I’ve been on racetracks a lot; I’ve watched races, I’ve read all the booklets; and when it comes to knowing a thing or two, we pretty much all know a thing or two.
So I’m not a good tipster.
As much as I’d like to think I am: The worst horse racing tipster is usually a guy who’s been on the racetrack and knows everything there is to know. The best tipster has a job to do. They’ve watched races closely, read booklets, watched television ads, taken notes, watched race cars, bought race track maps, researched every possible way for an announcer to describe the race, and they have the ability to answer all of these questions in as few words as possible for the benefit of the world.
So if that’s a bit of a crutch — why do a lot of people use it?
Most people know that the tipster can win a lot of money, but a lot of people have a pretty broad idea of what racing tips can do for them. I’m one of those people. I’ve said this before, as has my friend Dan, and I say it again — when you see someone make an investment opportunity or get something done for you, you should pay attention. I’m a pretty good listener and I’m not an idiot, which I think is what makes this type of stuff so appealing — I get that it’s good for a buck, but to me, it’s good for the people — it’s good to get their money back.
How do you make money from the tips that you give out?
For the last five years, I’ve written a subscription service called Bricks of Life. If you’re a sports fan, there’s a chance that you’ve listened to me on the radio and on the web. When I’m on the road, I’ll ask my buddies and acquaintances to sign up so that, if I get on the radio, it’s not just me.
