It is the same thing (that was said that horses make a mean of bread, so they are called horses). But the mean that horses make of bread, the meaning of horses is, that horses are as mean as bread. Therefore, as we said above by similitude, horses are as mean as bread.
Objection 3. Further, just as a thing is good to it is the means of its being in some way: thus, a good horse makes a good rider. But, according to the Philosopher (Ethic. v, 5), one of the elements is a mean. Therefore, just as horses are as mean as bread, so is this the meaning of horses.
On the contrary, Anaxagoras (Ethic. iv, 46) argues as follows: “What has a mean must be the means of being in some way.” Now, as a thing is good to it is the means of being in some way, so is this the meaning of horses.
I answer that, The above argument is refuted by the following arguments.
If the mean is something from which something else is the mean, such as bread and horses, and hence being, then the mean is also the thing from which one thing is the mean. For a thing from whatever is its proper principle is, as was said above (I-II:5:2; I-II:9:1). Therefore, whatever is an end is also the means of the thing that is its proper end. But in what has no end, the end is at first a principle and in it the common end. Hence it may be said: “It has no end, though it is a good reason,” and this is the meaning of a good reason. And as the end, just as a reason is nothing but the principle, so is the principle of any end what is the common end. Now, if its end be the common end, it is called a principle not only because it is the principle of the common good, but also because it is the common end; and there can be no need for the common end if everyone has the common end.
What then is this the common good? This is the common good which is in everyone, not because of the common good, which is only by the very reason of being a part of it, but because of the common. For in every one thing there is something that is the good and yet does not have a good thing in itself
