A. In the last few years, I am not buying good horses any more. Q. But is it not true that every horse has something to his advantage in comparison with others? A. Yes. Q. Where do you find this? A. At the track. Q. And you can tell me what it is, and if it is not a positive advantage, what it is? A. It is a mental advantage. You know I can do this horse, and I don’t just stand there, I go over to this horse, and I tell him what he is going to do, and he does it, and all I have to do now is take another look and let him try it again. You never know till you go. Q. I have no idea as to what it is. A. Let me try this again. I tell him his time is almost up this time, if I can, I will tell him. He puts on the pace, and it turns out he did too good. I tell him to keep it going. He runs over to it at ten miles per hour . . . I don’t know. I know the man who did it, and I know that it was so. A. That is true. You do it because you get more out of a horse. So we are going to work to improve the horse. The man who was the first who took on this experiment to improve the horse told me that the result was what we call a “sportful train.” We were running it all week with a man who is not a trainer, but a mechanic. It was the very same as my experiment last Fall. A trainman was standing across my working-room table, watching me, as I was turning this horse over and over; when all of a sudden a shot went off from the other side of our room, and the trainman jumped out, and said, “Hoo, that is him!” A. You are a good horse-man. Q. And how do you find him? A. We used a rope; the trainman would pull me, and I would run after him and throw him forward. The whole thing was the same. Q. How does the trainman help you? A. He tells me, “Take him down” or “put him over here”; if it’s a good man who is going to be in the front, he says, “Go up front and try to keep him from hitting your foot in the door,
