The American Horse Racing Association (AHRA) states that a horse weighing in excess of 5,700 pounds must be on thin skin, meaning that his joints must be able to move freely without discomfort, and that he must have soft bones (calcified bone) at a bone density of 18.9 percent. This does not mean that a heavy weight is impossible to lift; rather it means that a heavy weight will take longer to reach the horse when the horse is in motion than when he is stationary. A heavy weight will also drag a heavier weight off his hooves, and will make it harder to get a clear idea of whether a horse is moving or stagnant.
A horse that weighs 15,000 pounds may be able to pass a test as short as 100 meters. A horse weighing 15,000 pounds or more may be unable to do that test, or they may not pass it. For that test, the minimum and maximum weights must be determined before the horse can complete it. A horse weighing in excess of 15,000 pounds can pass as well as a horse weighing 15,000 pounds, but a horse weighing 15,000 pounds or more may be unable to complete the test.
For example: an 8,000 pound stallion can pass an actual racehorse that weighs 8,500 pounds. A horse weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds can get through, but will be unable to finish the test.
A horse weighing 3,500 pounds can’t finish the test. To finish it, a horse would have to weigh in at a weight that exceeds 5,000 pounds–a weight far beyond the capacity and muscle power of a three-year-old horse. A horse weighing in excess of 5,000 pounds can pass, but his body will be unable to pull the weight off his back as he is going down the track.
When can a horse have a weight-loss program?
When a horse is a candidate for a weight-loss program, the first step is to evaluate his physical condition and whether he feels that he can successfully recover. If he does feel that he can recover but cannot be expected to do that, the first step should be to determine why. Is it that the horse is underweight? Is there a health risk?
A horse that weighs 5,000 pounds or more may be able to recover after a reduction of 15 to 20 percent in body weight. Weight loss will also enable a horse to continue with the full training program.
