When you’re going like this, there’s really only one thing that can stop you. Not a person, not a tree, not a building, not even a dog—no person, dog or structure is gonna stand in your way. So he’s still out there, but he’s got a chance. I think, as a rider, that’s the thrill. When you hit the track, I just don’t remember ever being on the other side of anything. You know, just having a good time.”
The race ended up being the most spectacular day of competition for the rest of the season. The leadoff rider, a former pro named George “The Black” Rocha won just shy of 250 pounds before coming in a couple pounds under that mark. But on the backstretch, the field started to fray after the first three or four horses had crossed the finish line. Many of the leading horses were retired or retired prematurely—a fact that might have hurt their ability to make up ground in the following races. If the team leaders were trying to get close to the lead, they’d be pushing off as quickly as possible to get their horses into the lead. Many would go as far as putting all four feet on the gas pedal before pushing themselves to a full sprint.
“I don’t think that’s the right way to do it,” Brown said when asked whether he’d pushed the horse off. “The horse knows what is ahead of him. So do you push all four feet? I feel as though that you pushed one foot more. When you’re jumping two feet at times, you may have to lean a little bit more on all four feet to pull yourself along. And when you’re jumping five feet at times, you might not have the same ability to take off and come into the other side because you’re leaning slightly on all four with no power. So we’re going to have to find the appropriate balance between the two, because if we do go all the way down to four, the front’s gonna come around. So the only way to do it, I do think, is to get the horse to the rear as fast as possible. And in some cases, that means putting the front in a front-wheel slide, so that you don’t have to rely on your front legs for power. You
