It seems not more that once, but then again, I’ve never had experience with it. I’ve heard from some other riders that it’s a lot easier to whip a horse by kicking the tail. Maybe you could just hit hard and fast with the whip. We did it at the end of the day once. I remember the guy came behind me and tried to beat me in all the ways I could try. Well now I’m back off to the farm with the horses and the whip. I have a hard time remembering exactly how many times I whipped a horse. The only thing that stuck out was trying to whip a horse on the back. I must’ve been doing it a lot, but I didn’t whip a horse too hard.
On the last day I did it we all had a feast for the winner. After the meal we went to the barn to drink in the evening, then go home. But as I was making my way back I bumped into someone I didn’t know. I’m sure it wasn’t really him. So I went a bit off course and went by a tree. When I returned home I asked who it was. I asked the other guys who were there for us to come back for you. They looked at me and said, “We’re glad you’re not here.” But it was really me. My mother was sitting there and she said, “Are you mad?”
I said that I wasn’t, because there had been a lot of rumors. Some riders who tried to do it said you’d better whip a horse on the wrong side, because the horse will probably try to whip back on you. So I said, “Well, I can whip him one way or another.” I took the whip that was in my belt and I put a lot of it down on the horses right under the ribs. We all stopped for a second. Most of them just looked around to think what to do. No one had whip in their hand. I looked around for a good whip and found a whip. There was a pretty big one here, about two feet long. I went up to it and tried to put the right handle on it. But the horse pulled it back. We had all been whipped before, but this had never happened to a horse before. That was one of the first times I’d tried it. It went off right on the ribs as close as anyone could get to it, and the horse whipped back on every one of us. We all laughed
